So Trump, Obama and the Pope all have blogs…

Trump started blogging for his campaign
Obama blogged for free health care and gay rights
…and the Pope was blogging his memoirs

They would all have been better off using NicheBuilder to do keyword research, build their WordPress blogs and use the content authors within Nichebuilder…

Okay, you see here, this is what “newsjacking” is all about.

NewsJacking is a way of getting into the press on the back of another story.

You relate the most current breaking news “somehow” to your product or service…

News Jacking is the art up injecting your ideas into a breaking
news story.

When a new story comes out it usually breaks like this…
When to Newsjack

When news stories break, they follow a bell curve…

In the beginning they are hot and fresh. That’s when they break. This is exactly when you want to inject your twist on the breaking news…in the beginning

Your goal is to actually become part of the story in some way, although this is not always possible.

For example, when the iPhone 6 was released, Nokia was quick to act and released this picture…

They did that and it was re-tweeted 29,000 times.

Another example is the current very early presidential campaigning that is going on. In order for candidates to get any media attention, they are relating themselves in some way to the Trump candidacy.

Here’s why I disagree with Trump…
Here’s where I think he has valid points…
Here’s why Trump shouldn’t be President…

This is a win-win situation because it gives the reporters and journalists something they can sell, namely, more about Trump! It also gives the other candidates what they want…TV time!

Okay, so now let’s bring this home to your business…

How can you use newsjacking to grow your marketshare?

When news hits you want to make sure to post within a few hours but at the latest within the next few days.

The sooner the better because all of the big reporters are looking for interesting twists to comment on to make their stories seem more compelling as well…

So here is a step by step plan for doing a quick NewsJack…

Step 1. Setup a google alert for breaking news
Step 2. Do keyword research for the main keywords in the story
Step 3. Setup a new alert for that particular story
Step 4. Do a video commentary as quickly as possible and get it onto YouTube.
Step 5. Fact check your information. Make sure it’s not a TheOnion.com (fake) story.
Step 6. Go to BuzzSumo and find out who’s sharing related stories. Then send them your video link.

Okay, so there you have it. A recipe for a successful NewsJack.

Content Aggregation – How to Cure your Content Ills

Your audience and Google loves great, informative and fun content.

Marketer’s know content is what feeds their audience as well as the SERPs.

It can be time consuming, agonizing and expensive to pound out useful content from scratch.

So, many top marketing firms use content aggregation or curation.

You to can create extremely useful content by cutting and pasting, and curating your own content in the form of discussions, blogs, wiki’s, ebooks, emails, anywhere you can code.

On one extreme, content aggregation can be automated where content is scooped up by a robot and automatically published to your site or blog. Bots will aggregate or collect data from preset keywords or other targeting options, then republish on your website.

That type of content aggregation is not very valuable to most audiences and website visitors viewers. If too much work to find the information they are looking for, they will leave your site promptly.

On the other end of content aggregation is a process called content curation.

In it’s simplest form, it’s social bookmarking…like a facebook page where someone collects and posts links about a particular topic…like Paleo Diets.

A more marketable and controlled approach would be to build a resource page with your curated content.

Curated content has been touched by hand, more so assembled with intent.

This intent can be to make people laugh, inform/educate, entertain…whatever you do, make it about your audience.

Facebook does an amazing job at curating content, actually you do it for them.

It’s Genius.

For example, checkout The Paleo Diet Recipes page on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/PaleoDietRecipes

That page is full of aggregated content.

Link, photos, videos and text.

The links are from different websites, all supporting a Paleo lifestyle/diet.

Some of the content is original thanks to Facebook.

Facebook hosts the content curation and stimulates engagement on the curated facebook page.

So, Facebook sends traffic, allows hosting, and facilitates comments and clicks for the curated/aggregated page.

That’s some great content curation happening on Facebook, which is basically social bookmarking on steroids.

What’s even better than curating content on facebook, is curating content on your own website. You can architect your own value on a page that’s all yours, where you have the control.

That can easily be done on WordPress Blogs.

On your own WordPress Blog, you can curate content, links, photos videos from around the web. Tracking, offering products or lead magnets and retargeting features open up when you curate content on your own website.

This is especially important when you have an email list, as you can then drive traffic to curated posts on your blog that your list will love.

That’s the goal.

Curating content is a way to efficiently provide value for your list and also cold traffic from your market.

Here is a demonstration of content curation:

5 Keys to Content Aggregation/Curation

1. Quality and Value

As a content curator, you are marketing yourself as a supplier of good information: a funnel that filters out the crap and promotes the gems. The more people can count on you and the quality of your content sharing, the more they will eventually support you, share and click on your links, and recommend you to others. Quality is a differentiator as a curator. Content Curation – 5 Ways to Succeed

Yes, you want to share good information…the best stuff. If you sift through the less useful and less relative info online, and collect and present the most useful and entertaining content to your niche, that’s a big service.

2. Organization

In simple terms, the process of content curation is the act of sorting through large amounts of content on the web and presenting the best posts in a meaningful and organized way. The process can include sifting, sorting, arranging, and placing found content into specific themes, and then publishing that information. A Beginner’s Guide to Content Creation

This brings BIG Value to people. We’ve all been up late at night pouring through forums and videos to find key information. If you collect your best research and offer that to your Audience, that should really help them right?

So, like Pinterest Boards, Organize useful information…almost as a professor would for a class. This is cut and paste…pretty simple bookmarking here.

3. Relativity

…a content curator continually  seeks,  makes sense of,  and shares the best and most relevant content on a particular topic online.” Content Curation 101

Know your audience, and give them similar content around on theme.

Imagine if this post was an automated excerpt of every content curation article online. Wait…here’s an example of computer generated content aggregation.

There’s no love it that, and the articles won’t be related. Your viewers will be forced to work and sift through the topics to find the specific information that will help them or is more entertaining

Your vistors will Bounce!

Make your pages nice places to visit, where people will stay a while. That helps in creating good will with your list and warms visitors up to your offer.

4. Know Your Competition

…look at other sites that cover your chosen topic and ask yourself the following questions:

• Can I curate better than they can? Can you make your curation site more attractive to readers by offering greater depth of coverage, relevancy and/or consistency?

• Is there a better perspective or opposing point of view? Can you curate the same content from a different angle, highlighting a unique take on the topic?

•  Can I broaden or narrow my topic? Can you use increased specificity or, conversely, greater scope of topic to increase your content’s “discoverability?”

…excerpted from The Definitive Guide to Content Curation

See what people are sharing on social media and make it better. For example if the most shared post on the Paleo Facebook page was something about dessert recipes, then use that intel to know that’s the exact kind of information people are looking for on social media, and is exactly what you are going to improve and write about.

If there’s a viral post that has 12 Paleo Chocolate Deserts, organize content around 50 Paleo Desert Recipes.

Get my drift? Maybe you can organize the 10 Best Paleo Desert Videos onto a blog post, make comments or just add the videos. Always think of adding more value!

5. Headlines/Titles

Once you’ve gathered your fresh content, and deemed it worthy to republish on your social sites, the next step is ‘the attention grabber.’ Read the post thoroughly and create short updates that introduce the content to your community. Say something interesting and create a really great headline for each post. Never publish content without your own input or insight! Content Curation Vs Content Aggregation

Putting some effort into a good headline will pay dividends. You can start by molding your headline into one of the following formats:

Ask a Question – Example: Are there such thing as Paleo Desserts?
Add Numbers – 10 Paleo Diets in 3 Minutes or Less
Emotional Words/Adjectives: Fresh Recipes to Boost your Paleo Pride
Gain: Save Time with Paleo Meals
Prevent Loss: Don’t Eat Paleo Trash, Good Recipes Here

Article Overview

SEO Concepts – Pagerank, Backlinks, Relevance, other Internal SERPs you can rig.

Requirements – Website/On Page SEO, Keywords

What Not to Do – Spammy link Practices, outsourcing SEO, Software

7 SEO Strategies That Work in 2015 – Link Profiling, Web 2.0 Properties, Blog Commenting, Articles, Broken Backlinks, Link Trading, PBNs

Now, to get page #1 results, you must have an understanding of basic SEO concepts like pagerank, backlinks and relevance.

Then later we’ll cover the requirements for SEO and go into detail on what will waste your money and get your website banned by Google.

And last but not least, we will give you 7 SEO strategies that are Google Friendly. Most of them are so natural and useful to people, they will never be marked as spam. You are going learn how to strategically place and build useful backlinks links to related content on your website.

Oh, and one last thing, Google has close to 70% of the search volume while Yahoo and Bing Squabble over the other 30%.

SEO Concepts

Pagerank(PR) – What Google see’s as your page’s value.   Determined by backlinks from other valuable pages. PR can be passed through “do follow” backlinks. PR of 1- 10. Google and Twitter a 10

Relevance – Links from irrelevant sites are useless.   Find relevant sites to link from or make your own. Relevance in Keywords.

Backlinks – 60% of Ranking Score, Choose good Neighborhoods and funnel that PR.

Easy Raking on Internal SERPs – Internal search engines, like those on Facebook, Linkedin, Amazon, Youtube can still be manipulated as they don’t have the powerful algorithm of Google Search.

Ok so let’s dive into SEO Concepts and talk about Page Rank

PageRank is what Google uses to determine the importance of a web page.  Google calculates pagerank based on things like the number and quality of links leading to that page. Pages with higher PageRank are more likely to appear at the top of Google search results.

According to Google:

PageRank works by counting the number and quality of links to a page to determine a rough estimate of how important the website is. The underlying assumption is that more important websites are likely to receive more links from other websites.

How to SEO a WordPress Blog Pagerank Example
PR Diagram(forgive the resemblance to Agar.io)

It is not the only algorithm used by Google to order search engine results, but it is the first algorithm that was used by the company, and it is the best-known.

See this visual example of pagerank.   Site’s B and A are benefiting from 2nd and 3rd degree links downstream.     Site C passes the linkjuice from the “D” sites and helps rank the B site. Eventually all that link juice from the D,C, and B site is passed to the A site.

So, understanding how PR works will guide you to building more powerful links.

It’s best get links from higher page authority sites, because they have lots of link juice that will pass right through to your site via Backlink.

A Quick note about PR. Google updates their pagerank internally quite frequently, but Page rank is only updated publically every 6 months or so. So page can appear to have a PR of Zero, but Google internally has a different Pagerank.

Also, There are tools which you can add to your browser that quickly measure the pagerank and other key metrics of the page that you are on.

Next up is Relevance.

Relevance is of prime importance when doing seo. Ask yourself whenever building a backink before posting each link is, Is this relevant.

And, if you can’t find enough high quality relative pages to work with, then you build your own high quality sites and pages to link from. More on that later.

Next up is Backlinks .   A majority of your SEO score is determined by your backlinks. Some 60% of ranking score by Google is determined by backlinks. And it’s not just quantity of backlinks anymore, it’s quality.

Remember different types of backlinks carry different weights with google. A link from a highly relavant, high PR site, will bring you great link juice, but a couple hundred links from bad neighborhoods bring no juice, and could also get your site deranked.

Links built in repetitive, unnatural ways are discovered by the search engines and the website those links were pointing at is discredited, or worse triggers a 2 year de-index. This de-indexing can be done by a computer, or a manual review by a person if your link building triggers an alarm or you are reported for a “link building scheme.”

It’s not as easy to game the system, as it was prior to 2011. Using a computer software to make links, or paying someone on Fiverr to use linkbuilding software is a waste of money.

Even hand done seo is figured out by google when repetition is involved. For instance, if all of your backlinks had a hypertext of the same keyword, or even your company or product name, the links would be given less credit. Google is always sniffing out un-natural link building.

Web 2.0s are high ranking social websites that allow you to stake a claim on their domain. Facebook, Pinterest, Yahoo Business Profiles and many other websites allow you to create pages on their sites.

There are so many blogs, wikis and social media sites to make high quality pages, funnel PR and get a juicy, relevant backlink from. In a sense, claiming page on Web2.0 sites allows us to stake a claim on other domains, and point links back to our website.

You make these links Relevant by adding keyword rich and useful content to our off-site pages. We can even funnel PR from some of these Web 2.0 sites, but at the very least, we are building relevant backlinks and engaging with our market.

The key web 2.0 properties to establish are:

A special note on Google+. There are many SEO benefits to having a verified and robust google + page. It is google after all. If a local business, Verify your business’s physical address with Google+ and get Big SEO Value. Use your keywords in the page title and Build a Google+ Business page with keyword rich media. So, be sure post relevant, useful and entertaining content for your audience. That drives quality traffic to your website which scores you SEO points, and also encourages natural backlinking from social sharing and engagement.

Some web 2.0’s allow you to pull internal pagerank and that will funnel that PR through to your website. Facebook, Youtube and many of the big players don’t pass PageRank, but other sites like behance.net and bigtent.com, freeimages.com and many more have DoFollow links.

To take advantage of this, you just have to find related web 2.0’s with do follow links, then make related pages on those sites and then engage with members. That pulls internal pagerank from their pages. And if you smartly follow and interact with the members that have the highest PR Profiles, then you funnel their pagerank back to your website.

The sites like youtube that don’t pass pagerank externally, still pass it internally.   That means you can engage socially on these sites to help your web 2.0 pages rank in google.   For example, On youtube, you can help rank your videos by commenting on other high PR channels. Your comments make an internal link and funnel PR from Channel to channel.

Want an easy place to start, Stake your claim on your favorite social media site. Come one, You know you have one…FB, Pinterest, Instagram…where do you hang out, or better yet where does your market hang out?

Now you will have a valuable web 2.0 link, possibly passing pagerank, you will have a channel right into your market. If you develop popular pages on Web 2.0’s that allow ads like facebook and twitter, you will be able to run and test payperc-lick ads to your market, and also expand your market with the advanced targeting tools.

This not only facilitates organic linking, it naturally diversifies your link portfolio. It’s best to have backlinks to an array of pages on your site.

Here is a Content Marketing Strategy for you – Take the top ranking articles in your niche or your competitors top blog posts, rewrite them and and make them better.

Make a catchier title and headline using similar keywords, then post them to your blog. This will be link-bait for viral sharing, and also provide google exactly what it wants to rank for a particular keyword.   I really don’t see the value in posting article sites, especially when using the Web 2.0 Tactic.

  • Search out related blogs with open comments – search parameters:

Type in Google: inurl:blog “post a comment” -”comments closed” -”you must be logged in” “ADD YOUR KEYWORD”

  • Read the article and make a comment that addresses something specific in the article, or offer some additional useful advice.
  • Include your link to more helpful content on your site.
  • Login is ok, put your backlink in Profile like Disqus

Not only will this help ranking, you’ll receive organic traffic as well.

You’ll want to put comments on high quality and relative blogs. Quality comments does not mean leaving comments like “nice blog” with a backlink. You’ll want to respond directly to the blog post you are commenting on, and add some helpful information.

One strategy to get comments on high traffic blogs is to search the top ranking blogs with your keywords and make comments there.   Some blogs don’t allow you to add links in the text, but you can have a fat backlink in your commenting profiles, like Disqus. Make sure you change the hypertext and links when running multiple blog comments.

Link Exchange

Strategy: Trade backlinks with any remotely related websites

Benefits: Easy To do, Can get high quality links, Informs others on SEO

  • Contact remotely Related Websites, Non-competitive.   Help them too.
  • Check with friends, family other high profile folks on Social Media

A lot of people ignore this one, I think because it is so easy.   One of the quickest ways to get relevant, quality backlinks is to ask.

Ideal sites are those that contain your keywords and are not competitors.

When approaching websites like this it’s best to explain how a link trade would help both of your SEO. Present yourself as careful and selective in your linkbuilding.

Explain that you can have a mutually beneficial relationship for ranking ranking.

Think of all possibilities here, Other relevant folks in your space, friends, families sites…every legitimate backlink counts.

Remember, Change up your link! Don’t use the same backlinks and hypertext.

Broken Backlinks:

Strategy: Finding broken links on High PR Sites and offering Replacement content on your site

Benefits: One of the best strategy to get High PR Links

  • Search out broken links on pages with related content of the site you are trying to rank. Use Browser tools to find broken links
  • Make substitute content and place it on your own site. Source original content from Waybackmachine.org
  • Offer the webmaster your new link with live content.
  • You can also find broken links by looking at the backlink profile of changed or disabled websites. Use search strings like search strings like “service not available”, “page no longer exists”, “website does not exist”

This technique will allow you to get legitimate backlinks from pr7 Websites. What you do is search out broken links on websites with related content.   Then offer the website owner to fix their broken link with your new link containing valuable information.

When you find a broken link, lookup the original content on Waybackmachine. Then you write a similar article or a new article that would be relevant to that page you are trying to replace the backlink on. Provide something that would add value to that page, and would give reason for the webmaster to swap out your link.

There are browser tools that check for broken links, so when you’re searching out high ranking websites in your niche, you can browse their sites for broken links on pages and offer a substitute link to useful content on your website.

Another way to find broken backlinks is to work backwards from the company or website that no longer exists.   If you find a site through search strings like “service not available”, “page no longer exists”, “website does not exist”, you can look at their link profile and see where their backlinks are.   So, that would give you a list of sites to contact about backlink replacement.

Private Blog Networks

Strategy: Rebuild sites on expired High PR Domains and funnel PR to one Money Site

Benefits: Very Effective, High PR Links, Controlled by you.

  • Find Related Expired Domains with PR1+; Page Authority 30+, Trust Authority15+ and Citation Flow15+
  • Build on WordPress Blogs.
  • Add valuable articles and kw rich content, source from Waybackmachine.org. Point all sites at the site you want to rank.
  • Use Separate Hosting for each site
  • Do not internlink sites. Use different plugins and themes.
  • If you make these useful sites, they will rank themselves

Private Blog Networks or PBNs are groups of 5 or more websites that you create in order to funnel PageRank to your main site.   These aren’t just any websites, they are built on High pagerank expired domains. That’s the key piece.

First, You buy a used domain that has some decent links(from legit websites) and is in your niche. Then you dig up the old content from the WaybackMachine, or make new similar content and enrich with your keywords.   Then you add a few links back to the site you want to rank, using various keywords in the hypertext of course.

The pagerank should hold or be re-established and then you are funneling pagerank that’s relative to your niche. That’s powerful!

When building private blog networks, there are quite a few precautions to take in order to make the sites look like they were built organically.

One is to host the sites on different servers.   The next is to use different wordpress themes and plugins for the sites. And lastly, you never want to interlink your PBN sites.

Also, don’t get caught up in bidding wars for expired domains. There’s a guy on Fiverr that will find expired domains with decent page authority, trust and citation flow.

Now that you know what’s working and not with SEO, you should be less tempted to hire an offshore SEO agency for $99/month to rank your new website on page one in 3 months.

It’s fine to outsource specific SEO tasks as we just discussed, but remember, anything in repetition and un-natural growth will trigger red flags with Google.

So, how about it?  What SEO strategies do you have to share?  Local citations working?  What are the best tracking tools…let us know what you think.
